Wallace Family Goes West!
Welcome to our chronicle of our Carpe Diem decision to undertake a 6K mile – 40 day and 40 night – trip across the US to see family we haven’t seen since pre-Covid, and a small 3 week detour to hit a few states out west… We have an almost 3-month old… so we are trying to make the most of our overlapping parental leave.
We’d like to have started planning and prepping for this 1 year ago, but I (Kristin) wasn’t pregnant and the whole world was locked down… So, this “spur of the moment” idea, which had percolated for years, was only going to be viable if:
- Baby was born healthy and labor and delivery didn’t have major ongoing complications (check)
- Rob and Kristin could get two vaccinations each (remember when that was questionable??) (check)
- We could find an RV that was viable in our price range (check – we hope)
Well, we did… and have been scrambling ever since…The RV needed a few things, which turned into a few more, which turned into a whole new floor and a facelift. Do we camp regularly? Nahhh… Do we travel in campers? Never. Do we have a new infant? Yes. Does Kristin love freshly laundered sheets, towels and maid service at the Ritz-Carlton? Yes. Luckily… Does Rob shy away from challenges? No. Is Rob “handy”? Yes.
40 Days and 40 Nights. 5-6000 Miles. 1 preschooler. 1 new baby. 1 furry. And (hopefully!) 1 grandpa.
Wish us luck!
